The Public Safety Committee of the Los Angeles City Council reviews the Police, Fire and Emergency Management departments and their commissions, criminal matters of the City Attorney, emergency preparedness, rewards and police reform and sends recommendations to the full Council, which makes the final decision (Council resolution, CF 26-2000). On Oct. 6, 2026, the Los Angeles City Council's Public Safety Committee approved nine of 11 items, including a one-year extension of LAPD's auto dismantling contract with SA Recycling through Nov. 21, 2027, 5-0 (committee report), and a motion on illegal dumping enforcement and its 2026-27 funding; the SA Recycling report is the only committee report posted, and the Council voted 14-0 on that item on Oct. 7 (meeting, Council meeting). It continued a motion asking the City Attorney to draft changes to the sit-lie and property storage law, LAMC Section 41.18, to a date to be determined; the same day the Board of Fire Commissioners sent the Council a report supporting the motion that proposes 500-foot zones around City fire, police and dispatch facilities. On Sept. 15 the committee approved a motion asking the City Attorney to draft an ordinance that repeals the unenforceable parts of the City's drone rules, LAMC Section 56.31, and lets the LAPD respond to dangerous drone use (committee report), an ordinance banning nitrous oxide sales by tobacco and cannabis retailers and, as amended, a request for department presentations on El Niño storm preparations (agenda). On Sept. 15 the Council voted 13-1 to replace the committee's Aug. 26 request for an ordinance allowing 30-day vehicle impounds for illegal dumping with one for an ordinance deleting the impound section, LAMC Section 41.70.3 (Council action, Amending Motion 14A).
