Mayor of Los Angeles
Karen Bass is the Mayor of Los Angeles, in office since December 2022. The term ends when the next term begins on December 14, 2026. The Mayor is the City's chief executive, manages City departments, appoints general managers and commissioners subject to Council confirmation, proposes the annual budget, declares local emergencies and issues executive directives that bind City departments unless the Charter or an ordinance conflicts (Charter Sec. 230 and Sec. 231, City code library as archived by the Internet Archive). Every ordinance the Council passes goes to the Mayor, who has ten days to approve or veto it; an ordinance the Mayor neither approves nor vetoes in that time takes effect as if signed, and the Council can override a veto within 45 days by a two-thirds vote, or by a three-fourths vote if the ordinance needed two-thirds or more to pass (Charter Sec. 250, archived copy).

The same day her office said LADOT began a safety assessment on Oct. 8 near Central Avenue and 69th Street, where an 83-year-old man was killed in a Sept. 30 hit-and-run, a day after the Mayor, Council member Curren Price and the LAPD offered a reward of up to $50,000 in the case. On Oct. 7 she approved the Council's transfer of $12,978,581.08 to the Fire Department for its state Medi-Cal emergency transport payment, due Oct. 16 (CF 26-1353), and on Oct. 5 she approved the Landscape and Site Design Ordinance, Ordinance No. 189065, effective Nov. 15, 2026 (CF 24-1399). Her Nov. 3 reelection race against Nithya Raman is on the Mayor race page.
