Board of Police Commissioners

Updated

The Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners (the Police Commission) is the five-member civilian panel responsible for overseeing the LAPD, with an Office of Inspector General that reviews shootings, uses of force and misconduct investigations for it. It approves department policies and reports, such as the body-worn video and police dog policies on its Sept. 22, 2026 agenda, and forwards contracts to the Mayor and City Council.

Latest as of October 8, 2026

On Oct. 6, 2026, the Los Angeles City Council voted 10-4 to assert jurisdiction over the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners' Sept. 22 approval of an agreement with Axon Enterprise, Inc. for an automated license plate reader pilot, the Lightpost Test Pilot Program (motion, Council action, CF 26-1394). The Commission's Oct. 13 meeting is cancelled, according to the City's cancellation notice (agenda index). The Commission's Oct. 6 agenda listed an LAPD report revising its rules for holds on impounded vehicles and setting up an auto release portal; minutes were not posted as of Oct. 7. Its Sept. 29 agenda included an Inspector General review that found the LAPD "has not consistently implemented" its 2022 pretextual stop policy (OIG report), and the Commission sent the Council a one-year extension of the SA Recycling vehicle recycling contract (transmittal), on which the Council recorded a 14-0 vote on Oct. 7 (CF 26-1377).
